Once Upon A Time

Once upon a time there was a fantasy writer so absorbed in world building and magic systems that he forgot to notice all the real magic all around.

Like grapes.

I mean talk about something magical. Bite sized and delicious.

And how about onions. Not only do they make soup taste better they are self dicing. I mean chop, slice, slice, slice and the onion is diced and ready to add to the soup.

I don't even want to start on bananas.

Caper's Song Book

https://gamerplus.org/blogs/post/798

A bard's songbook is like a magician's spell book in that it contains words of power, songs for wind, songs for rain, songs to make the fire burn hotter and warm the room, songs of companionship to warm the heart.

https://gamerplus.org/blogs/post/797

Ari and Caper worked on Caper's Song Book last night on Inspired Unreality.

First we worked on a list of songs.

Song to make people dance
Song to make people alert
Song to make people like me AKA the opening numbers
Song of reflection
Song of hope

We will use this thread to wok on Caper's Song Book.

The Case Of The Harvest Festival ... continued

Mathius said, "And how did my maps get here? I know Marantha didn't take them."

Just then the adventurers walked through the door looking a little bit tired of being regaled.

Everyone looked up and a hush fell over the room. Once again the witch put her finger beside her nose. "Maybe our heroes can help us solve this mystery."

The Case Of The Harvest Festival ... continued

The sheriff shook his head and the confused look on his face told the others he was as perplexed as they were.

"This is the craziest thing I've ever investigated," Slykver said.

The witch raised her eyebrows and glancing around the group admitted rather reluctantly that she too was confounded.

"I can't say that I see anything particularly telling in this hodgepodge, but I feel that there must be something that connects the items or maybe there is more than one thief and each chose something that was conveniently available."

"But who would think a cat's milk dish was worth taking," Mavis interjected. "What's even less understandable they took my corsets.

When the shouts of laughter died Mavis glowered and informed the group that it wasn't a laughing matter.

The Case Of The Harvest Festival ... continued

Milathia was visiting her sister, Marantha, at the Apothecary Shop. While they chatted the witch was looking over Marantha's small collection of magic items.

Mavis Goodbody barged in mumbling to herself. "Stuff missing here, stuff missing there, a ring, a knife, someone even took my cats milk dish. Makes no sense."

"What's that," said Marantha, "Someone took your cat's milk dish?"

"And that's not all." said Mavis.

But before she could finish Sheriff Slykver and Mathius came in arguing about the maps. "They were just hand drawn maps in a tube." said Mathius, "Nothing special about them."

"There she is," he said and walked over to Milathia. "Tell the Sheriff about my maps."

Before she could speak the witch piped in. "Do you mean these maps? I was wondering what they were doing in the magic items. Ain't nothing magical about them."

"My maps!", said Mathius. "Now how did they get there?"

"Maps, a ring, a knife, and a milk dish." said the witch laying her finger beside her nose.

Moon Pies Delight the Eyes

When I was a child Moon Pies were a treat that couldn't be beat. I could even make my own if I wanted to. All I needed was some graham crackers, a couple of marshmallows and a chocolate bar and I was in business.

In those days a bonfire, a long stick and a package of hot dogs often preceded the gooey goodness of the Moon Pie. By the end of the meal we were usually covered in ketchup and marshmallow-chocolate goo.

Mothers would shake their heads and bemoan the effort it was going to take to get us cleaned up and dads just grinned and remember when it was them.

Life seemed simple then, of course I was probably 10. Now it seems the hot dog comes in a cardboard tray and you eat it on your way to the next stop and hope the dog does not make a mess on your new dress.Moon pies are round, wrapped in plastic and come from the store. Makes me miss those days before everything was labeled and bought at the store.

Crabby Apples Make Angry Pies ... continued

That's the truth, but I'm sure there are worse things to step in or on. For instance the rather prickly cactus can help you create a rather interesting new dance step but you will take little pleasure in the accomplishment.

Mostly Kind Of Like That ... continued

The hat on my head keeps me dry but his doesn't even try. It's a sad thing that his hat has lost it's T and it's mostly just a ha! If you can't keep your Ts then it's best to wear a cap. So now you see that this is even better than that.

Once Upon A Time

There was a fairy princess.

hairylarry posted on 2018-04-08 at 23:35 Central Time.
- link to this story -

She lived in a tower.

hairylarry 2018-04-09 at 09:53 Central Time.

It wasn't a very tall tower but none the less it was what it was.

vivian 2018-04-09 at 11:24 Central Time.

And being what it was, was it tall enough? It was taller than a tree. If it wasn't a very tall tree. It was taller then a giant. Unless it was a very big giant.

One day a giant came to visit the princess. A very big giant. Carrying a very tall tree.

hairylarry 2018-04-26 at 22:43 Central Time.

"Greetings my giant friend," the princess said. "Why are you carrying such a tall tree?"

"Uhhh, hmmm, well you see," the giant muttered.

The princess exclaimed, "Yes of course I saw it or I wouldn't have asked about it."

This seemed to further fluster the giant and he bellowed, " I was getting to it when you interrupted me."

The princess knew the giant to be a kind creature and in a calm voice said, "I apologize, please continue."

"Well it's like this," he said looking uncomfortable. "I was thinking about your tower and realized that it had no real shade on a sunny day so I thought I would bring you a nice tall tree to shade you from the summer sun."

vivian 2018-04-27 at 19:29 Central Time.

The giant planted the tree to the south of the tower so it would shade the princess from the sun. And since the tower had no moat the giant dug a moat and since the moat had no water the giant redirected a creek from the northern hills into the moat.

And the water splashed in the moat and the fish splashed in the water and the creek kept running even after the moat was full and the water ran out and watered the tree.

The tree liked the water very much and grew even bigger. Soon some branches reached out over the tower to shade the princess even more.

And the moat made the princess safer but the tree had the opposite effect because any brigand who could climb the tree could crawl out onto a limb and drop right onto the top of the tower.

hairylarry 2018-05-03 at 17:31 Central Time.

It was the animals who finally decided that the princess, kindness in her nature towards nature, deserved a defense against any intruders who might happen along.

The Animal Defense League was a hodgepodge affair, but effective in that the nocturnal creatures would stand alert at night and the day-time ones would keep an eye open during the day.

The tree approved, sending signals through its ever-growing root system to the nearby forest, letting other trees know that they, too, might someday be called upon to help.

The princess, though smart and affectionate to all, knew only a little of her self-proclaimed defenders. In her castle, she worked on her sword fighting, and her ballet moves that acted less as dance and more as agility, and she read up of heroes and their tactics.

"Why are the heroes always boys!" she'd mutter with frustration to the limbs of the giant tree.

"Where are all the girls?" she'd ask the squirrels outside her window.

Dogtrax 2018-05-05 at 10:06 Central Time.

"I don't want to be a princess in a tower.", the princess told the squirrel. "I want to be a hero. Or at least a heroine. I mean, why did I say, "at least". I would be proud to be a heroine."

The squirrel said, "Follow me."

And so the princess climbed out on the tree limb and followed the squirrel to the ground. "This way.", the squirrel said, and he took off across the field.

The princess followed the squirrel and following the princess was a rather strange retinue of woodland creatures, a badger, a possum, a fox, and a mountain lion. She wouldn't have even noticed them except it's hard to miss a mountain lion.

She gestured and the mountain lion came up and walked beside her. She idly scratched her ears as they all followed the squirrel.

Into the woods.

hairylarry 2018-05-08 at 08:18 Central Time.

It never occurred to her that being a fairy might in some ways make her a target for would be bad guys looking for some way to make a bit of ready. Then again fairies tend to live long and healthy lives.

As she walked beside the mountain lion she thought about her life thus far and realized she had spent much of it training for a life she knew very little about except through her books.

She had no experience in defending her tower against an intruder and began to wonder more about the creatures who were escorting her across the meadow. If the fox and mountain lion were allies of the squirrel was that not unusual? What about the badger and the possum? This was indeed perplexing.

She turned to the mountain lion and asked "Sir Lion how did you become an ally of the squirrel who came to offer me help?"

vivian 2018-05-09 at 15:36 Central Time.

"Oh", said the mountain lion, "I am not a knight, in fact I'm a girl too, like you. And as to the squirrel and I, that's a story in itself."

"You see, although the lion is the king of the jungle a mountain lion is not the king of the woods. There are many creatures more ferocious than I including brother badger, over there. But the most ferocious of all are hunters who seem to take to the woods like every animal there is theirs, so to speak."

"I was enjoying the afternoon sun under a big oak tree, about half asleep, when it started raining acorns but only right where I was at. Looking up I saw the squirrel, there, who was trying to warn me. "Hunters!", he said, so I headed into the underbrush and hid in a ditch."

"This was not courageous but it was wise as soon the hunters went galloping by on their horses."

"Since then Mr. Squirrel and I have adopted a simple policy, "I'll watch your back if you watch my back", which has contributed greatly to our well being and general security."

hairylarry 2018-05-09 at 17:09 Central Time.

"Oh my," the princess sighed. "I have so much to learn! Thank you for telling me about Mr. Squirrel and I do apologize for assuming you were male."

"It's quite all right Princess, it's a lot easier to tell a female fairy from a male than a female mountain lion from a male lion I suppose. Unless you get a little personal and I do not recommend that!"

The princess suppressed a surprisingly unladylike guffaw and nodded her head in understanding. "Do you know where we are going?", she asked. "I am a little nervous about being away from my tower."

"I'm not sure but I am sure Mr. Squirrel will tell us when we get there, Princess." The lioness turned abruptly and motioned fox, badger and possum to hurry up. When the other three joined them they quickened their pace.

Mr. Squirrel was waiting for them sitting under a brush pile. When he emerged suddenly the princess screeched. "Shhh" he said. "We must be quiet now, no more talking. We are nearing our destination."

vivian 2018-05-14 at 15:03 Central Time.

"There is a fairy circle ahead, the biggest mushrooms I've ever seen. And we should be really quiet in case the Fairy King is in his circle. Never can be too sure when he's going to show up."

They all followed the squirrel quietly and after they'd gone a couple hundred yards they peered around a bush and there was the fairy circle. The princess whispered, "That's not the Fairy King. Unless the fairy king is a girl."

"Oh no, oh no', said the squirrel, "something is wrong. That's not the Fairy King. That's the Fairy Queen."

She must have known that the princess and her animal friends were there because she gestured them forward. They quickly approached the Fairy Queen but did not walk into the circle. The princess curtsied and the others did the best they could at bows and curtsies. Watching closely the princess figured out that the possum was a girl while the fox and the badger were boys.

"At least I won't make that mistake again.", she thought.
