Access Bollywood ... continued

"It's Arjun." blubbered Mallory "He's dead."

"Dead?" I asked. Arjun Mahabharata was the director and he was more than that. He bankrolled about half of the big Bollywood hit movies. And he had helped me more than once.

She nodded crying. I couldn't help myself. I hugged her and comforted her. Actually I was comforting myself. I needed someone to hold on to. My world was shattered.

"Oh, Dante." she cried into my shoulder "The worst thing is, he was murdered."

My knees buckled and I almost fell taking Mallory with me. We found a couple of directors chairs standing alone in the chaos and we both sat down. I put my head between my hands breathing heavily and she stroked my shoulders. Now she was comforting me. I'm pretty level headed but right then I was lost. I had no idea what was going on or what I could do.

Country Daze ... continued

So I wasn't the only one who saw it. The picture on the screen showed more detail than I had seen outside when I was startled by the light.

After the contact info they ran a video. It wasn't like an explosion and it didn't travel like a meteor. It looked like a geometric object with many faces and spikes all over it. It got bright quickly and then suddenly blinked out.

I'm not sure why I did it but I took my tea outside for one more look. Am I glad I did. It was really dark. My eyes hadn't adjusted so I had to walk carefully. When I got to my spot I looked up. And what a show!

They were everywhere, all sizes, all different like snowflakes. Some of them lasted as long as five seconds but most were there for only a second or two. Hundreds of them, white and blue white. And then they were gone.

I almost dropped my tea. I've never seen anything like it. I just stood there for five minutes waiting for them to come back. I finally thought I better go back inside and check the TV.

Country Daze ... continued

Then a particularly bright light lit up the sky. I stared, looking for any trace of what I had just seen and found none. How could anything that bright not leave some type of trail I wondered?

Feeling a little disoriented I decided it was time to head inside and settle down for the night. My home is nothing fancy but it's comfortable.

I wandered into the kitchen and decided a hot cup of tea would hit the spot and maybe some of those homemade cookies my aunt had dropped off would take the edge off.

With my tea and a plate of cookies I settled in front of the TV and flipped through the channels to see if anything interesting was on.

My attention zeroed in on a guy talking into a microphone while pointing toward the sky. As the camera panned upwards I saw the bright light again and heard "any information about this object"

For a few seconds I stared at the image that was frozen on screen and then the contact information started rolling over it.

Access Bollywood ... continued

We hadn't been soaking up the cool air for more than
an hour before somebody was banging on the door. "It's open!" I called out.

One of the callboys stuck his head in the door and said we were wanted back on set. "What for?" I demanded.

"No idea." he answered with a shrug."You think they tell me anything except what to do?"

This job doesn't pay enough to end up with heat stroke," Joe Nix muttered. We all nodded in agreement. The six of us stuffed our tired feet back into our shoes and headed back to the lot.

At the gate we were stunned to see cop cars and an ambulance. Lights were flashing everywhere.

I stopped to take in the scene only to be shoved aside as the rest of the crew pushed through. The place was in chaos and nobody seemed to be in charge.

Then I saw my dance partner Mallory and started walking in her direction. Mal's makeup was smeared and she had been crying.

"What's wrong Mal?" I asked, and she threw herself at me and began wailing loudly.

The Learch ... continued

The look of alarm on his face warned me that he was not receptive to my attempt to engage him in conversation. I quickly smiled and said "Don't worry. I'm not a member of the tesser patrol."

He grunted and stepped up to the counter to pay for his bread. The scanner beeped and displayed symbols I did't recognize. He reached into a pocket in his suit and withdrew a round thick token which he slid into the slot below the display.

An alarm immediately began going off and the Learch grabbed his bread and ran toward the exit. The scanner was spitting out tokens like a rapid fire machine gun and customers were grabbing them as fast as they could.

I knew it wouldn't be long before security officers responded to the scanners malfunction. I was patting my badge to make sure it was there as they charged in. One walked over to me. He glanced at the badge. "Seems legit." he said. "Got any ID to prove who you are? I showed him my tessering license.

He nodded and walked away.

Jazz ... continued

I watched as more of the club's clientele were marched through the door and wondered what the funny business was. Then they brought Bobby "Beau" Brio in. I was shook. I leaned over to Jonas and whispered, "You see who they just brought in?"

"Yes," he said, then went back to silently watching the scene.

Feeling miffed I ran my eyes over the faces and realized that there were only a few I didn't recognize even if I didn't really know them.

Then I saw Cecile. What the heck was she doing here? Cecile Potter's father, Wayne, owns the club she considers a blight on her social status. I'm busy making all kinds of conjectures when she spots me. With a look of relief on her face she walked over to where I was sitting and squeezed in next to me practically pushing me onto Jonas's lap.

"How's it going?" I asked.

"Oh absolutely flippin great. Best night of my life." she hissed.

"So why are you here? I didn't see you at the club."

"They came to the house."

Jazz ... continued

They herded us in to a desk with a burly police sergeant sitting behind it. Jonas and I and Jack Kumakis, the washed up trumpeter. The sergeant asked for ID and we dug for it.

He read our IDs and made some notes in a book. Jonas and Jack looked like they had been through this drill before. I think they thought we would be released but the sergeant said, "You guys look clean but there's been some funny business going on at that club and we got orders to question everyone. Just sit over there and the detective will get to you as soon as he can. Been a busy night so far."

The bench wasn't comfortable but there wasn't anything we could do about it. Jonas took it in stride but Jack was a little jumpy. I wondered if he was up to something but then again I was jumpy and I knew I wasn't up to nothing. I started to chat but Jonas gave me a look and I shut my gob. Just the three of us, sittin' there not saying anything. I think that was the plan.

A Night In The Park ... continued

We hurried down the path but I was gasping out of astonishment more than for breath. "What was that? What just happened?"

"He wasn't really at the table with you." Abriel replied. "You can think of it as a hologram or as astral projection, the result is the same, he looks like he's there but he's not."

"He was over at that other table. That was really him. And that disappearing act, he does that. I don't know how."

"In the day he's weak but I hate to have him following us." Abriel continued. "I think we need some distance between us and the park. This is a new development, I've got to think about it."

My knees were still shaking but I bucked up. "We could go to my place."

"No, we don't want him following you there. Let's get on a bus and ride."

We walked to a bus stop and waited eyes peeled. I didn't want to see him but I didn't want him sneaking up on us either.

A Night In The Park ... continued

This scared the bejeebers out of me. A man was sitting across from me and he seemed to be immune to physical attack.

So where did that leave me or should I say us since Abriel was potentially in more immediate danger than me.

Surprisingly Abriel did not seem to be all that concerned. He brought out a small box from his pocket and clicked a switch on it. The image across from me began to distort and develop odd waving lines.

"He's around here somewhere." Abriel muttered and he has to be close by. He whirled around and focused his little box on nearby tables. Two tables away a man appeared amid gasps from those sitting nearby. He rose and bowed and then disappeared as applause erupted among the diners.

A guy at the next table yelled bravo! I've never seen such a great trick before. How did you do that?

"Trade secret." Abriel replied.

"Let's get out of here now." he threw some cash on the table and led the way to a door that opened out onto a wide paved pathway.

Little Miss Tuffit

Litle Miss Tuffit sat on her Muffet because it was eating her cottage cheese.

Along came an eight legged creature who began to sneeze.

Miss Tuffit cried, "Would you stop that please."

"I would if I could but I'm allergic to Muffets, especially when they eat cottage cheese." he replied.

The Muffet said "I'm not scared of spiders and continued eating his cottage cheese."

Miss Tuffit said, "I am", and ran off.

The Muffet said "That's a load off my back. Thank you spider. Do you want some cottage cheese?"
